• MRC Support and discussions

From StackFault@10:102/3 to All on Sunday, April 09, 2023 09:30:17
    Hey all!

I'm back at working on MRC after a couple years hiatus. The platform is still going strong with a steady 110+ BBSes connected and regular traffic.

Here are the support options for discussions/feedback if you need and to keep you in the loop of the developments.

    - ArakNet Discord server in #mrchat
    - Phenom Discord server in #bbsmods
    - Matrix in room #mrc@matrix.bottomlessabyss.net (NEW!)
    - The Bottomless Abyss message bases and email
    - This very echo :)

Anyone interested in following the developments, provide feedback and
sharing ideas can do it in any of these forums. I'll also be contributing
(and already started) in improving and updating the additional features to a number of BBS platforms. So far I've pushed some minor changes to both Enigma 1/2 and Synchronet but will continue to make sure these implementations still work with the upcoming changes.

If anyone is interested to see the developments in actions, you can visit The Bottomless Abyss at bbs.bottomlessabyss.net:2023 and hit the '%' option in the Communications menu. This will give you the latest alpha version so you can eyeball the features.

Development is very active for the past couple weeks with a new server
release, tons of updates and many many other fixes. You may even see version changes every day until I sink in all the new features.

    Looking forward to hear feedback!

    Cheers!

I was impressed with what I saw there; I particularly like /mentions and /twit - the red status line when writing direct msgs is also a great add - let alone the upgrades underneath the hood.

Great w0rk, theres several watching - since you've posted it publicly now I'll send anyone who asks questions about 1.3 to the "%" option. w00t w00t!

Thanks for all of the great work you're doing :)

Someone needs to convert this over to a door. I edit a few lines here and there to change commands over here, but I would have no idea how to interface this with Python to be usble.

All these mpy and mpl programs reminds me of all the pcboard ppe crap files. So MANY cool things could've been share with everyone was made for one bbs type.

Yeah, there is already a ton of other platforms with MRC but having a door would probably make things quite to another level.

Even it's a Win32 door (RG can run those with NFU/NetFOSS), but I'd ask to make it a console (sort of like MannIRC which will stay in the window and not spawn a new one (you know like that crappy odoors(sp?) library does which apam uses for all of his doors. Nothing kills the "BBS feel" like having a window pop up over top of your BBS window for no reason.

Well, it's been like forever since I wrote a DOS door, and never did a networked one yet. I'll have to figure out stuff a bit but if it works, it'll open the door to a lot :)

I'll take a closer look at MannIRC to get started, this should have most of
the components I need to figure out.

    Cheers!

I could see it being occasionally disruptive if you're actively using the PC you run your BBS on. Otherwise, who cares if it runs it its own GUI window? As long as it sends I/O to the BBS, it's fine.

A while back I did throw together a quick Win32 program in C using the OpenDoors library, seeing if I could connect to the MRC server. I got a 'HELLO'
response from it, so a door MRC client is definitely do-able.
