• Scotch: Lagavulin 11 Year - Offerson Edition

From Smooth@10:103/11 to All on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 09:04:11
I saw a post on discord by Whazzit of Blocktronics. He had drawn a new ANSI of
comedian/actor Nick Offerson. He was well known for the comedy sitcom "Parks and Recreation" and in the tech/scifi thriller "Devs". He's well know for being a burly man's man who smokes cigars and drinks whiskey.

He teamed up with one of the most famous Islay Single Malts distilleries to produce a custom release of Lagavulin. The Lugavulin Distillery was founded by John Johnston and Archibald Campbell in 1816, but records show that illegal distilling had been taking place on the same site as far back as 1742. It sits on a natural harbor on the south shore of Islay about half-way between Laphroaig and Ardbeg. It's core offering --- the sixteen-year-old --- won an unprecedented four consecutive double-gold medals followed by three Single Golds at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

I'm love my whiskeys and will probably try to get a bottle of this before Christmas. :D

Thanks for the details... I still write Whiskey reviews for every bottle I sip throughout the year, on my BBS. Its one of my guilty pleasures...

Maybe I'll look for that vintage when I peruse bottles next. Cheers!

My current bottles are an unopened Ardbeg (birthday present) and an
Irish whisky called "Writer's Tears". It's barrel aged, has a nice,

Oh, and a bottle of Old Potrero, a rye whiskey styled after 18th

Prepare to be smacked in the mouth with sweet sherry flavors. It's a very
mild, drinkable dram, doesn't need water, and sadly goes down very easy considering the steep price.

The Glendronach 18 is actually a misrepresentation of true age of what's in
the bottle....but I encourage you to research that yourself and prepare for
    the rabbit hole.

The 21 isn't as heavily sherried so you'll miss the fruit and caramel flavors.

My gf likes to tell people that Glendronach 18 is a dangerous gateway drug
into whiskey for non-whiskey drinkers, and I think a decent number of people
in our lives have thus far proven this correct.

I've been sampling A LOT this year... I'll start posting my reviews here, and on my board... right now I'm enjoying a fairly inexpensive local to Oregon flavor:

Broken Top Mountain Whiskey from Sisters, Oregon... its a straight
    bourbon whiskey.

another, thats a lot more top shelf, that I'm going to pop tonight is a little odd, with flavorings of pinot noir. Pretty weird, IMO...

Westward Single Malt Pinot Noir Cask. Lol, I didn't even think about it... this
is also an Oregon whiskey. Guess I'm all local this holiday.

Taking weekend trips to wine country is something I'm looking forward
to when thing to back to whatever normal will be. I decided to sign
up for a wine club to help out one of my favorite wineries, Preston
    Farm and Winery in Healdsburg.

I've loved their Zins for many years, and their grounds are
wonderful. They have an organic market (really a shed with organic
vegetables and a basket for putting your money into, bread baked on
premise, local cheeses, olive oils, a bocce court and a picnic area.
The whole experience has a wonderful, relaxing rustic feel to it.

My mom is a white wine drinker, and their "Madam Preston Grape Wine"
makes a nice christmas present. It's a wonderful Suvignon Blanc blend
    they do every year.

Their table wine is wonderful, and you can bring the 3 gallon jug
back for refills. At least you used to be able to.

My wife and I would drink regularly but when we took a month or so off, my wine fridges got full. Now that it's slowly emptying out again, I'll have to restart my deliveries. I usually get random selected bottles of their best selections. However, my wife and I have been buying and ordering select bottles during this lockdown.

If you like peaty whisky's, then you will love Octomore. Made by
Bruichladdich, it's the peatiest whisky I think you can buy, and it's bloody good. Expensive. But if you're a Peaty Whisky fan, you'll probably see why
    it's my favourite!

For my money, anything coming from Kilchoman these days is the best Islay flavor profile a person can buy. Highly recommended :)

Octomore is great, though. I also love Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte.

    Whats peaty whiskey?

I assume its just ignorance - as I drink a lot of different types of whiskey. Too many to be proud of. :P

    Whats peaty whiskey?

Peat is used to make fires to dry the barley. It imparts a smokey flavor to
a whisky and is a common trait of what are called Islay whiskys after the region they're from.

    Whats peaty whiskey?

There's a whisky region in Scotland called Islay. I may be butchering this history but essentially, when toasting the barley, it was traditional in
Islay to use dried moss from peat bogs to toast the barley. That, coupled
with the freshwater native to that island, creates a very unique whisky
    flavor.

Peaty (or "peated") Scotch from Islay can be characterized by having a strong smoky flavor, somewhat medicinal like iodine or even formaldehyde. It sounds gross if you haven't had it but if you're into bbq and smoked meats and
spices, you'll probably wind up enjoying it.

Great explanation - I drink some whiskeys, and while I'm not a super fan of 'peaty' tastes, I think lasts nights glass had some peaty tones in there. :P

Thanks for your great description, and the previous posters too.

That, coupled with the freshwater native to that island, creates a very unique whisky flavor.

The way that works today in Islays, or at least this is what I've read, is the ¨malt is sprouted first, and the peat smoke is used to stop the sprouting ¨process.

As that happens, the smoke gets into the barley malt.

And for people who have never had an Islay, this isn't smoky like canned fish ¨might be. This is *hardcore* smoke. A whole different level of smoke. It is ¨one of those rare things that don't compare to any other taste. You can ¨compare, say, soy sauce and mushrooms, but you can't compare peated scotch to ¨anything else, at least, nothing I have ever had.

The first time I ever had an Islay (it was Lagavulin), I was walking briskly ¨on a beach in Mexico and took a big mouthful all at once from the bottle, and ¨almost puked. And then I coughed. And I almost puked some more. And ¨everyone made fun of me. But that's okay because what kind of dork swigs a ¨mouthful of single malt scotch from a bottle?

I mean, well, me, but...okay have at it.

If any spirit deserves a dainty little sniff, swirl, and miniscule sip, it's ¨this sort of scotch.

I imagine someone, somewhere, gets drunk on this stuff but it'd be impossible ¨for me. I have had quite enough before the alcohol climbs up my spine.

    Highly recommended!

I love me some peaty Scotch. My go to drinks at home are Ardbeg Uigeadail and Laphroig 10 Year. My father-in-law and I would always take turns buying Lagavulin 16 Year. :D

My wife and I have been watching "Men in Kilts", a show where the two stars
of "Outlander" tour Scotland, each episode focused on a different area of scottish culture or area. They genuinely have fun together, usually at each other's expense.

Each episode makes us want a "wee dram" as they would say in the show.
Current favorites are Ardbeg and Caol Ila.

What I really like are the solid stem whisky glasses they have in the show. They're not terribly expensive.

I haven't seen this show, and while this isn't the area to chat about steams, thanks for sharing that title. I'm into whiskey and I'm into steams... I'll have to checkout Men in Kilts. :P Thx.

Also, I hope to see what the hub-bubb is about these solid stem whiskey glasses
    - I'm always game for a new, cool way to sip my favs. :P

I have those Single Malt Whiskey glasses here at my house but for some reason my father-in-law drinks whiskey out of a shot glass. I miss those days when my
Dad was still alive. He would hang out whenever he's in town and have dram of
whiskey or scotch with a cigar in the other hand. He'd never light it but he loved the taste of the tobacco in his mouth. hehehe
