You can't smoke a cigar without cutting it first. Unless it's them cheap swisher sweet ones behind the counter of 7-11. hehe

You'll need to cut the front of the cigar in order to puff. Otherwise
you'll get a headache trying to puff on a capped cigar (NEW cigar). :D

There's different tools that you can use to cut the tip of your cigar or to cut the cap off of a cigar. The cheapest one to get would be a guillotine cutter. All cigar shops carry the plastic ones in bulk. They're only a
few bucks each. There's a punch that cuts a hole in the cap. You can push
a punch cutter a little in to cut through the filler a little to make it easier to puff. Another cutter that I love to use is a V-cutter. It cuts a
v shaped cut into the front of your cigar. There's also the double blade cutter that has two blades. I've used them all but prefer using the guillotine style and double-blade cutter. Guillotine for most standard
cigar shapes and double-blade for torpedos/belicoso shaped cigars.

Cigars Haven has a great article showcasing cutting tools and step-by-step process of cutting your cigars.

I'd never thought about trimming the burning end. That would make it
    easier to light.

I have a Zippo lighter I love to use to light cigars, just make sure
you let it burn for a bit to get the lighter fluid taste to burn
    off... :(

I'm more of a pipe smoker myself, I have around a dozen pipes and
close to 50 pipes of my father's that I'm selling.

And now I'm tempted for a morning pipe with my cup of coffee. Dunhill
even made a tobacco called "Early Morning Blend".

I meant the backside, the end that you puff on. hehe

I used to use a Zippo lighter too. I usually carry one of them torch lighters or a box of wooden matches when smoking cigars.

My friend used to smoke a pipe whenever we smoked cigars. Some of the tobacco that he use to bring to smoke smelled great. I was tempted to pick up pipe smoking except for the part of not being satisfied to have just one pipe. :P

Do you have pictures of any of your pipes?
