Are we sure everyone is seeing these messages from "Mike" ?

They're going straight to my DUPE area, and not in 0n-warez where it
should be - and it's not happening to anyone else.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out why it would actually be a dupe,
unless he's using MSGIDs that are already in my system from other
messages. Or, if Platinum Xpress doesn't actually /use/ MSGIDs (which I
don't see one in the kludges I pasted below), and when he replies to
someone, maybe it's sending it off with the original message's MSGID
with the new message? Hard to tell from my end. JP, what say you?

I actually saw the original one normally - Mystic did not catch it as a dupe on my system. :/

His posts to Dovenet seem to be arriving on my system just fine. However, one thing I noticed, is that when his messages are sent through Vertrauen via QWK networking, all of the kludge lines he's quoting are reformatted (the ctrl-A characters are changed to "@" like they're supposed to be).

Everything appears to be normal on this end, but I'll do some log spelunking and see if I see any other weirdness with his posts.

I have a feeling it has to do with Platinum Express not using MSGID, mixed with those CTRL-A characters. Unfortunately, my hub that is catching these messages as dupes doesn't pass them on to my BBS, either.

I don't htink anyone likes Platinum Express, people just use it becuase
    there is nothing else.

When I ran WINS I bitched almost daily about PE, re-building the mesage
areas by hand every 3 months wasn't fun either.

    Hi Tiny, Hi Jack

    Small Update...

Checked everything again on my config here and found nothing wrong.

If I reply to a message the "->" is here displayed correct.

I don't know what happend on the way to Jack (nothing against you Jack!!!!). The logs didn't tell anything!

And you are right! If you use Wildcat Interactive Server, there is no alternative to
    Platinum Xpress unfortunately.

And the programmer isn't really interested to work on a modern version of PXW. Customer requests are not even answered or are downplayed!
So much to a commercial BBS program! I don't wanna say more to it, but if I would plan again building a "new" BBS, maybe my choice would no longer be at Wildcat!
    Who knows :-)

My personal opinion is (to Wildcat Interactive Net Server)... There are some things, I
really miss, which programs.. like AmiExpress, PCBoard (which I used in the past) could
handle since the mid of the 90's! So enough told! lol

    Hm...

It could be, because I don't use the QWK part for transfering and getting/sending messages from/to Mike Powell, Capitol City Online BBS via FTN. Maybe there is the
1st point to look for the "fault"?

For me it is hard to say.. "It's not my fault!" I generally always look for a fault in myself
first! But I found nothing I could change.

Nah, I'm definitely not trying to pick on it, whatsoever. I actually commend the guy (it would be nice if I could tell him that, though!) for running something different from just about everyone else.

Anywho, I saw his replies (in my DUPE base), and in both of those he never removed the quoted kludges, so that was a hopefully temporary failed experiment. :(

I don't think I've ever actually looked at it from a sysop or user perspective. I may have seen some screenshots of a default install once or twice, but it always turned me away when I thought about the price tag. :)

Sounds like my relationship with PCBoard at the moment - and I've only tried to add a lightbar matrix (a bunch of times). Apparently, I like punishment.. and I refuse to get my ass kicked by a BBS software from the 90s. :)

No, not Synchronet. I use HPT and the rest of the Husky Project on my hub. My hub feeds my Synchronet BBS.

As I wrote to Mike in the one message that got through to my system, I have a feeling Mystic and Synchronet both convert CTRL-A codes when quoting kludge lines to "@" so they're viewable. This is probably why most people aren't seeing what I'm seeing.

Husky and Golded haven't been messed with in about 7 months now, so there isn't really much new shit to be excited about lately. It was a decent time for a nostalgia adventure. ELiTE WRiTiNG, bad spelling, commented out (and hard coded) advertisements in code makes me want to run face first into a brick wall. :)

Yes, but it arrived in my SPAM folder.

2nd reason = your impression about this project of me?

Everything so far looks great! Very well put together, and easy on the eyes.

What do you like? What do you dislike? What is missing?

I'm not much of a fan for web forums, in general. But it's very clean and offers quite a bit of topics on the hobby.

I did notice that your information for Jack Phlash on the Zeronet ad/plug was wrong. He runs Distortion, and he's not from Meridan, CT either. I think maybe you got his information mixed up with someone else's.

Your judgment would be important to me..

My opinion doesn't matter much. What matters the most is that you're happy with it!

BTW 2: removed the kludge here

It seems to be working! It is definitely narrowed down to the ^A codes. Now we just need to see if you are able to convert them via a configuration option, or if I have to make a feature request to the developers of my tosser. At least, in the past 20 years or so, it has only happened once! :)

    Regards,
    Nick

... Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

    Done.

Yes, but it arrived in my SPAM folder.

    Hi Nick

    Thank you for your visit!

I'm a little bit sad that you don't like this way of conveying information!
In my opinion, a somewhat more modern way of conveying information.
Goal => to inspire new people for this hobby! And share news, experience with the
BBS programs/tools ad-ones about this topic.

BTW: I fixed it straight away with Jack! Thank you for your advise!

What does the forum need? More people, like you... the "old ones" which have expierence
over the years with this topic.

Hm.... Still working on that issue, that Mails from the forum are landing in Spam drawers.
But I'm new to this, too. Lot to learn.. but makes fun!

So... thank you again Nick and have a nice sunday!

    Mike

It's not even specific to web forums. It's the web presence in general. I use the web to search and download files I need, or use/access github, but that's about it.

This hobby needs all the help it can get to keep the interest out there and keep it alive. There is nothing wrong with your idea, and I hope it attracts new people to the hobby!

    Of course!

Anything done to possibly steer new people back to this hobby is always a good thing.

Hm.... Still working on that issue, that Mails from the forum are

Are you using a home built mail server? Are you relaying through an SMTP service of some sort?

It could be something simple like your mail server doesn't have a good reputation, or the reverse DNS records aren't setup or whatever. I had that same issue when trying to use Synchronet BBS software as an email server. There are definitely workarounds, but I just don't know them. :)

So... thank you again Nick and have a nice sunday!

    You too, Mike!

    Nick
