esc sent me a banger link the other day; https://archive.org/details/ibm-wgam-wbiz-collection

Its a period-correct collection of MS-DOS and Windows warez... just released on 06/24/2024, its a pretty nice collection.

    Most of the files came from two BBSes;

    The WaREZ HouZE
    Piper's Pit

... I've downloaded it and am working on getting it ready for hosting on Mystic BBS software; the collection comes in hundreds of .zip files, but within those tar .tar archives - so I wrote a script that cycles thru all the files, and re-archives the .tar bits into .zip so users can easily view them right within the Mystic File Menus....

At any rate, if yer into these types of datasets the ibm-wgam-wbiz-collection is en fuego! .. did I post about this already? Sheesh - either way, worth saying it again.

So much m0re to come; 2oFB users just gifted me a 72TB NAS - and I plan to take our 30TB of files to 100TB.... imagine those specs back in 1990!!! :P

It was neat to see the sizes grow over the years; I remember when 10MB in my Uncle's 5150 was huge... also remember when I had an 80MB drive - and was running a BBS using it!

Later, I remember thinking 80GB was the new HUGE drives - what do you think today's 'norm' is??? I would say 1TB - but even I want more than that even in just my laptops or desktop machines; while 1TB is still acceptible, I prefer 2... or 4TBs!!

I also try to have backup and NAS arrays that are much larger...

I have 1TB in my work laptop and another in my personal. It doesn't feel like enough lol. A couple of AAA games and kiss your free space goodbye.

Storage is getting cheaper and cheaper yet I always feel like I don't quite have enough.

I'd love to archive some content similar to you, Paulie. The only problem is my BBS itself is running on a VPS and storage is stupidly cheap there. I considered trying to get some S3 storage bucket and wiring it up to my VPS but that seems like a headache, and potentially a costly one. I also don't have the space to set up any sort of NAS over here. So, yeah, it sucks for me...please please don't shut your BBS down! I need your files! hehe

This is super frustrating. There is no way to buy these vintage games legally. If it were possible, I'd buy them! But Nintendo going after anyone sharing this content while they stand to gain nothing by serving a takedown is lame as hell.

My corporate laptop has a 512GB SSD, looks like they're around $35-$50,
whereas 1TB is around $100 on Amazon. For a large company that doesn't
want people storing data locally, that's pretty generous.

I have a 4TB SSD in my desktop, I was hoping to be able to put the OS
and all of my media on it, but it grew to the point where I was filling
my SSD and use an old 8TB SATA drive for media. It's backed up to my NAS
    and the cloud.

Oops - didn't realize this is zer0, but I DID see your login recently.... regardless.

In 2024, I think an [overly]acceptable HDD space is 4TB - its what I 'want' for my main laptops/systems... I still run 1TB drives, but I often take it to the maxx.

Yea - for BIG storage, homelab is the only way to go IMO... I do use OpenWRT to section off my network, but I still understand the reasons why this solution isn't perfect for others...

2oFB is here to stay - and I'm adding LOTS of data w/ the new NAS. :P 72TB, what o what am I gonna archive next?!?!!?

[This week its the Prelinger Library, ibm-wgam-wbiz-collection, BlueLeaks and...... ???

    w00t w00t!

So.... while I'm a super pirate, I kinda understand corps that want to protect their IP - I never agree with 30+ year protections, but that isn't ONLY what Kevin Yang was exploiting...

I wish Nintendo would leave Tetris out of it, and only go after Switch hackers - but ... they won't.

I find 1TB as the bare minimum - but do understand when its a company device, or if folks use Apple hardware. [lol!]

4TB goes a long way for me - but as you mentioned, I host most of my data on a server so... I just use my local drive for OS, hacking and Downloads.

We've come so far from vintage machines!

Good lord. I really need to come leech a bunch of your shit, but I've been trying to hold off on going on too many file hunts until I make more progress on organizing my own archives, which has turned into even more work than I figured it would be (and I already knew it would be a ton.) It is, on the other hand, kind of fun looking at all of this old shit again.

    Even if NOT to download a bunch of stuff - I can find myself getting lost VIEWING legacy files for a few hours... there really is a HUGE archive @ 2oFB - and we're adding a bunch m0re as of late; its amazing what a new NAS will do for ya - I've added 3 more mirrors this week!;

    Prelinger's Library
    ibm-wgam-wbiz-collection
    ROMhacking.net mirror
    BlueLeaks - LEO hack dump

    (That adds another 1.5TB...)

We have over 50 File Conferences of close to 1TB mirrors... and I'm just getting started. :P
