eXoDOS v6 was released a few days ago!
eXoDOS is a massive DOS game collection aimed at preservation, but with
a focus on playability. That is, while they strive to have every commercial game fully intact with manuals, artwork, etc. (as well as
often including extras like strategy guides, FAQs, mods, trainers, etc.) rather than just being a collection of disk images, they have them all pre-configured to install and launch from a frontend.
I've been a big fan of this project for quite a few years, nabbing an early version of the collection many years ago strictly to poach files from it. When v5 was released, I actually installed it and used it a bit as intended, and, despite strongly preferring to play retro computer
games on real hardware, was pretty impressed with the work that has gone into it, both in terms of available games, and all of the care that went into trying to get them properly tuned, patched, and configuring the launcher to support numerous options like different video modes and
sound cards, sometimes even alternate versions, etc. It's a vastly superior experience to downloading a game that relies on DOSBox on something like Steam or even GOG.
OMG, this is horrible news.
Now I have to go download another 600GB, add it to the NAS, import to mystic and add hundreds of file bases... UGH.
IIRC, you can just download whats new between 5 and 6 - thanks for the news, I'll get 2o updated shortly. :P
I regret they are disappointed by the-eye.eu hosting and I'm sure v6 is not there yet. That was great opportunity to grab titles one by one in separate zips instead of having the whole package stuck on a single computer download
I'll check if they offer -light version which was only the player and library manager and metadata and everything else was downloaded in individual torrents on demand when you selected it in the library
manager.
Confirmed. There will be light version available soon. 6GB to download, 12GB after installation. Reasonable starter. When I find link, I'll
share.
Second, are you saying you break eXoDOS apart and host individual games from it? Hmph. I mean, the standalone configs work fine, I guess, but
one of the biggest strengths of it is the complete package, with Launchbox, etc.
The ZIPs can still be used, without the optional *Windows* frontend, and is how I use eXo anyway... since I'm not on doze.

Nice! This is what I'm looking for.
The "lite" version you guys are after has been released as of sometime yesterday. Grab it!

I'm slightly miffed at the eXo team right now. Only a couple of days
after releasing eXoDOS v6 and its media pack, they decided to make numerous corrections and fixes. I assume these are things they probably could have caught ahead of release with more testing but, you know, shit happens. The annoying part is they decided simply put out a "release 2" version instead of put the changes into the new fancy updater which was one of the selling points of v6, so anyone who had already downloaded it (me) needs to re-download parts of it. For the main torrent that's only like 18% that needs to be re-downloaded, not too bad, but for the media pack it was a lot worse. Then, they almost immediately after THAT, they post a little manual download to fix a regression in the v2 release.
Call me a masochist, but I usually DL the entire thing even if I
'qualify' for the lite version... I don't even know WHY I do that - I'm
a data hoarder and I like collecting it... bit by bit. :P
As am I. I prefer not to be reliant on something I have no control over being out there in the years to come, if I can help it.
One more update in subject. IF you go to the-eye.eu then you'll find full version of v6 and media pack as well, light also included.
I've already grabbet the .torrent - and now need to update 2oFB w/ the
v6 file overhaul.. fun fun. :P
Don't forget the media pack. Lot of interesting PDFs inside. many rare
and obscure.. like game catalogues to promote mail based orders.
Companies don't do it anymore and some of these ordering booklets are really looking nice!
