... as I look around my living room, I see many retros; whether its the Commodore corner, w/ a C=64 that I should have sent off to aNACHRONiST weeks ago - to a C=128 that is my battle station - to the Apple IIe that I still write my journal in every morning at 7:42am... to the Apple G4 'basketball' machine that was so sexy some 20 years ago - to the Dolch PAC 486 that runs so many OSes, on different CF Cards.... I love it. Even the Atari 400 - with its cartridges still serving up BASIC and some assembly carts that I don't know how to use - the FujiNet 2024 talk was just a couple weeks ago - but it still doesn't know how to talk to the internet.... one day. :P

    I'm st0ked about the zer0 retro echo - let's g0000!

Whaaaa... you write a journal on an Apple IIe?! That's sick, dude.

I mentioned this to you in email, but I just welcomed my 5th Amiga into my home on Sunday (although 3 of them are 500s, so that's not quite as crazy as it sounds.) It's an Amiga 1000 which I've never owned or even touched before, but I've always thought they were quite aesthetically nice looking machines with that kind of compact "pizza box" style case. Pretty stoked to test it and get it all cleaned up.

So yeah, I've got a big pile of Amiga stuff next to me - I've sorted through most of the books and software now, but tomorrow I'm I'm going to test this Amiga 1000 (and a 1080 monitor and another 1010 external floppy, plus an extra keyboard) then disassemble it for a nice soapy bath. As far as I could tell it's in pretty good cosmetic condition, but filthy as hell.

    I'm st0ked about the zer0 retro echo - let's g0000!

Yep. Like I mentioned in the announcement, me, you and esc are all deep into it, so even if its just us three talking (it wont be) we could have a lot of posts here. ;)

Thats super rad - I still don't have an Amiga in my stable... I'd love to find a 1200, or even a 600 - one day I'm sure I'll get my chance. :P

Thing is - I never used Amiga in my young years, so its all learning when I do dive in. I've had a lot of experience w/ emulation... but I gotta get over to the dark side.

I'm sure - if you're not a member of any local retro groups in Portland, I'd guess that would be your best opportunity for deals. The ones I'm in up here often trade, sell, and post other local findings for way below eBay prices.

Same thing! I wanted one desperately when I was a kid, but never got one, but I'd been intrigued by them ever since.

Theres a [new] retro computing meetup happening in PDX. Adrian Black, the youtuber, attends; seems like a good group of retro enthusiasts.

Those types of groups, VCF and other enthusiast gatherings offer the best prices - there are some stupid people trying to cash in on the retro craze... but so long as you steer away from those purchases its still a good environment to find deals.

Just gotta find the people that love this hardware like we do - I give out deals and will never pay premiums. Together we can make sure hardware doesn't die, and is traded fairly. :P

Nice! It's funny, when me and my friend Spec (who ran/runs? Theoretically BBS) talk about anything retro computing related, he always brings up Adrian's Digital Basement. I'm pretty sure it's the only retro channel he watches, but he watches every episode like multiple times. :P

We have quite a few people up here in Seattle, but I'm not sure who is or isn't well known outside of Eric AKA "AmigaLove" - dude has a sick forum and awesome articles and YouTube videos, and seems like an all around good dude. He also runs the local Commodore group which I've attended one or twice. He's actually the person who turned me onto this A1000 lot last week. Definitely look into him if you've never checked out his site or channel before.

It's funny, the first SEA-CCC meeting I attended, since I was the new guy they asked me a lot of questions, and I ended up just talking about BBSing the entire time. It was fun as hell.

Yeah, I've noticed people who are obviously just trying to make a quick buck often get shunned by these communities. The members themselves often give each other really generous deals and share deals they're not going to take advantage of with others instead of just buying up cheap finds to resell them for a profit - hell, I've seen stuff worth a lot given away for free multiple times too.

Unfortunately the scarcity of some of this stuff does mean that occasionally people will overpay for stuff they really want if someone shows up asking way too much for it, simply because they have the disposable income and don't want to wait for a better deal. Everyone has different limits when it comes to what they'll pay and/or what different "holy grail" pieces for their collection that they might go a bit wacky over.

All that said, I'll look out for any local Amiga 600s or 1200s for you. Unfortunately they don't come up too much, but when they do they're usually good deals.

Speaking of good (?) deals, I had to buy myself an A1300 "genlock" for this Amiga 1000. I'll almost certainly never actually use it, but this particular model is made to fit the form factor of the Amiga 1000, which is just too cool, and ended up finding a boxed version in good shape for $50.

Have you heard of the RetroPi project? It's really insane. You use the OG Amiga hardware, custom chips, etc., but the CPU duties are relegated to an emulated 68k core running at high speeds on a Pi CPU daughterboard. It's nuts. Super cool.

I /almost/ caved in and got an Atari Falcon but it's not really meant for my purposes, which is retro Atari gaming. It's got compatibility issues with games so not for me.

Plus, the STe can evidently work with a PiStorm. So I'll be doing that. :P

Oh cool gonna give this a call.

I have an obsession with retro hardware as I'm sure you've gathered lol. So I like the PiStorm project that basically just acts as a CPU accelerator on actual OG hardware.

There's also part of me that prefers running true 68k processors, so a lot of my Amiga gear has a legit 060 board :P

I have an ST that I haven't dug into yet... a 400 w/o any cartridges, and needing some power supply love - but its on the horizon. :P

Nice! The ST is fun. Let me know if you need anything for it (files etc). There are fewer mods for these machines than the Amigas but that honestly just makes them easier to get set up.

I love to dive into these different platforms, learn the thing and document it for future me... then, 6 months later... on to the next one.

Same here lol. And honestly I don't /use/ some of my gear as much once it's set up, the journey of getting things built is half the fun for me.

Oh yeah, I've seen a bunch of his videos and am currently subbed to him - I usually steer more towards the PC related stuff, as I don't have more than a passing interest in all of the A/V stuff he likes to cover (though some of it is pretty damn interesting, I admit) I've disagreed with some of his points on more than one occasion, but despite the authoritative way talks in some of his videos, he's pretty modest about not knowing everything and letting his commenters correct him, so fair enough. Good, lesser known (well, 180k subs, heh) recommendation!

I think I first came across him via some videos of him doing thrifting in the Seattle. It's always interesting watching people thrift in your own area. Fun fact: He doesn't advertise his location much, but one of the best known retro YouTubers LGR (AKA Lazy Game Reviews) is actually in the general area where I moved here from (Asheville, NC) and I used to hit up some of the same Goodwills as him as he did in his old thrifting videos. Unfortunately, my luck was about as good as his was towards the end (which is why he no longer does him - Thrifting kind of blows these days!)

Okay, I've *not* seen any of their stuff! Judging them on their looks alone (looking like a cartoon hacker) I have a feeling this phone phreaking video might make me cringe a bit, but looking at their video list makes me want to binge the entire account. Very nifty.

Yeah, I sub to this one already, but I don't watch it much because this dude is way too fucking handsome, and I'm afraid if I have one of his videos up on a monitor and my girlfriend walks by it'll all be over.
