• How to make Windows XP Safe (and fast)

This is a great web page outlining how to cut down Windows XP and make it as safe as possible with an outdated OS.

I ran XP Lite for some time as-is, I thought that having a cut-down operating system would help. This guide goes farther, stopping all local network services and setting group policies to limit access to the network to internet only, creating a HOSTS.TXT file blocking internet to unneeded sites.

Thought it might be of interest.

This is really cool, thanks for sharing!! I might use some of the suggestions here on systems I have that still run XP.

Very cool. Gonna give this a read.

I debated using WinXP or Win7 for my BBS hosting purposes. To be clear, this is mainly for DOS and Win32 things - the majority of what I use is in linux.

I ended up going with Win7 32 bit in the end, because it seemed easy enough to get a somewhat modern-ish web browser on there, but ultimately that was the main reason.

Is Windows XP the last Windows that would run DOS programs natively?

Well, it's a 32-bit OS, so it's got a built-in 16-bit DOS VDM. I ran my BBS under 2000, XP, 7 and 10, I'd say XP was probably the best combination of features and DOS compatibility.

I never had problems with 7, but the noise level seemed higher with it.

I built an XP VM using the guide and it does go through and make things locked down, and trimmed, pretty nicely - however, it messes up many network-related things (which you shouldn't use XP for anyway)...

It is fast, secure and as advertised.

Hm, so now this makes me curious about trying to see if I can spin up a VM with this in it. Sort of by following the directions in that Digital Ocean Windows VPS writeup I did with Demonic.

Agreed with this answer on all points.
