The internet archive has Omni magazine, too. Reading Mondo and Omni
together are like layering psychadelics.
lol glad I wasn't the only one struggling with HPCAV vs HPAVC
My vote is for H/P/A/C - that seems to stick in my head from the '90s.
Now I'm off to go tell the friend who helped sell me on "HPCAV" that
every single person on Zer0net says he's wrong and should be ashamed of himself...

You know, I never really read much Mondo 2000 and its predecessors
before Wired came around, and by the time I started reading Wired regularly, it was so watered down and chalk full of ads, it was pretty damn bad IMO. There was definitely a golden era though.
There was a free newspaper/tabloid in the San Francisco bay area called
N O D E, if I remember the marketing correctly. It was like a MONDO
2000 meets 2600 magazine, but circulation was sporadic and it
dissapeared without a trace. I can't find much about it, except a web
site that looks like it might be related.

I wanted to use this post to ask about the history of this term...
- Does anyone have a historical record about its evolution in time?
- Why are they grouped together in the first place?
- Is the C about carding or cracking?
3. We debated that earlier in this area also. I'd personally always
known it as cracking (in the hacking sense, not in the software cracking sense) but others always knew it as carding. When I searched around, I find old references to it being both things, so... *shrug*. Personally, carding probably makes more sense, being much more distinct from hacking than cracking, though in some scenes software cracking was a massive
part of the underground scene so that's certainly a possibility.
1. I assume by this message that you read some of the earlier posts here on that topic - I mentioned some of the oldest ones I found by casually searching through old text files in one of my posts. It does indeed go back quite a ways.
2. Going by the same reasons we grouped them in the 90s and we still do even today, I'd guess mainly for practical purposes, like to denote special interest boards on BBS lists and ads, to label dedicated file areas and message conferences, that kind of thing. Early on, I'd also
areas and message conferences, that kind of thing. Early on, I'd also guess it was much less known, resulting in it being kind of a
purposefully esoteric "if you know you know" kind of term. I suppose it still is, to some degree.

I guess we did accidentally stumble upon an interesting topic. ;)
It always meant cracking to me, too -
Hacking, Phreaking, Anarchy, Virus [Virii], Cracking - do ya'll remember similarly? Carding WAS a part of hpavc for me, but my carding didn't go much beyond getting STARTER accounts w/ a 'valid' card #. I never sent
$$$ to an address using stolen creds.

I could get 3 refunds a week - every 72hrs - without AT&T asking
questions. I did this throughout my sophomore - senior years in HS. It
was a nice way to get $120/wk. :P
Oh yeah I did read the entire thread. Didn't notice those were old mentions. Just thought you were trying to prove HPCAV vs HPAVC. There's tons of files that have some mention to this term.
That does make sense! This connection isn't too explicit, going by what textfiles say. I guess then BBS users generally sought out this sort of information; it's much easier to make a category for it. Without this context these scenes seem more distinct.
It is still very much unknown for the outside at least. I did a search
and almost didn't find any mentions. I see it's more prominent on BBSes and text files. For me, they talk so naturally, seems like I should have known about it earlier.
Never thought about the "cracking" part that way :p it would overlap
with the hacking, unless using the old-school definition.
The "carding" part does seem out of place, compared to the rest it seems like it requires a lower skill level.
I don't remember where I read this, it was years ago from a text file. When people started carding, they usually bought modems and other
computer equipments. Police started to notice this pattern, and these carders pretty soon got arrested.
Yeah, it is! This stuff is important to know about, as is an integral
part of the scene. Thanx for the 0day info.
That's a fun story, but why every 72h? And makes me surprised it worked for this long without anyone noticing. I think corps are too big to
worry about this stuff.
I seem to remember it being cracking, also. For me, carding was just fun to go to a payphone and call 1-800-DIAL-SEX and punch in a cc number and then ... well, ya know.

So would they mail you cheques? Nice little "job" while in HS for sure.
Yea - that was the extend of my 'carding', too... but mine was done
online to start up a XXXXXXX.com account for the night.

Remember streaming jpegs and gifs and things like, line by line on 56k
on some pr0n website? Those were the days. Can't believe I used to jerk off to still images. Like the stone age. ugh.
Yeah, I think that's accurate. I started in 1995 which makes me a late bloomer compared to some of the people here, but anecdotally, a lot of
us (myself and my friends) got into this as kids or teens and the draw
of edgy, underground topics was strong, even if there was no genuine interest there. I suspect a huge amount of kids immediately sought out
how to become an "hacker" the second they spun up their modem and called their first BBS or online service. :P
Yeah, it is an old school definition - some people liked to make a strong distinction between a "hacker" in the classical sense of the word,
It depends. There are a lot of aspects to "carding" - I'd guess it originated in phone/calling cards and not credit cards, though by the
time I got into the scene a lot of the most common calling card stuff
was dead, and people were often looking for ways to exploit credit cards.
*wonders if I actually replied the same day or not*
They came thru with three scans - remember that bit??? :P Omg - that
first one... the outline. The second - more detail... the third; oh boi.
But I didso around... gosh - 70 times - so they weren't that good at looking at the history!
*wonders if I actually replied the same day or not*
Lulz not 0day but it's elite info.
For the record, this is 0net.. so everything here is 0day no matter what day it is. :)
I remember sometimes I'd start downloading some image and then I'd lose connectivity or the download would fail, ultimately I'd end up with a partial download. A lot of times I could open them and see parts of a
hot pic, but of course, the part that you really wanna see never made it over so it's just a big tease lol.
You'd pull down one JPG w/ made up of 100 thumbnails so you knew what pictures you really wanted to grab...

Duuuuude. We've gone so long without... :(
The term sounded metal, so I said "So, you want more George Benson and less Kirk Hammett?"
He chuckled - he is a guitar player.
Here at Zeronet, we've strived to bring up Metallica, Jason Scott, and maybe a couple other topics at least once, every. single. year.
This has gone on for at least 10-15 years, and this has probably been
one of the longest hiatuses of this event so far.. until JP ruined it.
I remember the multi year Coke vs Pepsi thread. That was great fun!
(Coke by the way is the superier beverage)
I have been watching Metallica video's for the last week or so just
because I forgot how good they really are. You can set a watch by
James' timing. As a rytham guitar player myself (before my hands)
I really apreciate that.

Ha! That's way too generous - I think its been mentioned far more
recently than that! Besides, it's more of an actual discussion than just
a mention, and it's been awhile since we discussed either topic in earnest.

adaptable. So we tend to listen to the same era of music for life.
Malcolm Young >> James Hetfield
Oh, and Rush's Moving Pictures - in it's entirety.
They're both masters at exactly what it is they do. But I think Hetfield could probably fill in for Malcolm, and not the inverse.
Malcolm is great for giving songs space and breathing room, only playing exactly what needs to be played with no embellishments or tricky/show-off-y things. Hetfield does lots of tricky stuff, but that's part of what I like about his playing.

While this may get me thrown out of the country. I hate
hate hate hate hate hate rush.
Why would they let someone who sounds like fingernails
on a chalkboard sing?
If they had gagged him they would have been good.
Subjectively, I'd rather listen to Metallica's better/best stuff than AC/DC's any day of the week too. :P

Ha! I *loveeee* Rush, particularly their 70s progressive stuff,
although some of their 80s stuff is great too, but I totally get this criticism. The only *real* reason I don't mind Geddy Lee's vocals is because I was indoctrinated at a young age. ;)
I apreciate their music... however:
I was too, the law in Canada says you must play on the FM radio the
only 2 songs Rush ever wrote once per hour. So I hear those first
notes to Tom Sawyer or the other one and the radio is turned off
at light speed.
If I never hear him screech again as long as I live I will die a much happier man.
