Ok, finally watched Romulus tonight. Cool flick! I noticed a couple shots that were clear throwbacks to earlier films which I thought was neat.

    SPOILERS AHEAD

Ok so wtf was that human alien hybrid? Is that what Weyland has been trying to build this whole time in the first place?

I thought the Andy character was great. I loved how his accent changed based on which AI he was running. Cool concept. I also really dug how they used the gravity in the film.

I was expecting a twist, though, and there wasn't one. Also the intro wasn't 100% clear to me...maybe I should rewatch it, but before we got to see the kids trying to escape that planet, it looked like some people were on a ship prying open a rock or something with a xenomorph shape inside? Was it a fossil? I couldn't pay super close attention because my puppy was biting me nonstop.

Overall great film. I'm really liking the continued investment in the Alien franchise.

Right?! I thought it was stupid.

Yep, I felt the same. He was a little odd, but maybe that was the point of him being an android.

They wanted to travel to a different destination and needed some form of energy for their sleeping pods to get there. This destination sounded like some means of freedom for them.

    ... I wish life had a scroll-back buffer.

I felt the same - it felt light on plot and heavy on action. Aliens was
the same at first, but it captivated you once you got into the
characters. I can't remember anyone from the film distinctly, whereas I remembered all of the marines from Aliens - and they've continued on in
    our memory.

I can tell you one thing sir. I still remember Hicks.. it was hell of a character who just returned from a Vietnam movie... to serve in space, by his attitude... :>

And that's how I still remember Alien(s) with all those marines... something like a "Tour of Duty" in Vietnam (tv series) but in space.... and without any chance to survival... comparing to 'NAM... of course.

Nope. This was *kind of* explained, although in a semi-subtle way you could have easily missed if not 100% focused, a tiny bit earlier in the film when they finally get into the main lab - it's been a bit since I've seen it now, but if you re-watch it at some point, you'll probably see that scene and how obviously it both foreshadows the ending, and ties the movie in with the events of Prometheus and Covenant.

In short though, in addition to whatever they were doing with the Xenomorphs themselves, the research station was experimenting with the same black goo shit as featured in those movies, trying to use its DNA mutation effects to "improve" humanity, but in the end, it's revealed that no matter how encouraging the results were, it seems their experimentation always resulted in the host's DNA being completely rewritten producing a new, fucked-up life form. With the station completely fucked, the android researcher dude (Rook?) was trying to save the research material for the company, which was his point in injecting it, and the resultant human hybrid thing was just the unpleasant side effect of the fact that she was pregnant.

I thought the Andy character was great. I loved how his accent changed based on which AI he was running. Cool concept. I also really dug how

Yeah, I've always liked the way they portray androids in the Alien movies, and he was especially interesting. I actually felt bad for him in the beginning. Great acting from that dude, too.

I was expecting a twist, though, and there wasn't one.

I believe the human hybrid thing (which evidently got a WTF from you?) was *supposed* to be the twist. The movie follows so many queues from the original Alien, that I guess if you were thinking it was just a semi-remake, you'd have been surprised by that moment. With no expectations, it's quite a bit less effective.

wasn't 100% clear to me...maybe I should rewatch it, but before we got

I believe that was showing Weyland-Yutani finding whatever that was from the wreckage of Ripley's ship from the first movie, and that discovery seemingly resulted in the research station where most of the latter movie takes place. So yeah, it looked pretty fossil-eque to me, but honestly, it doesn't really matter exactly what it was, because the main thing is that it was obviously *some sort* of Xenomorph specimen, and that's all we really need to know for that setup to make sense. *shrug*

Overall great film. I'm really liking the continued investment in the Alien franchise.

Glad you liked it! While not perfect, I thought it was throughly enjoyable. I'm sure everyone would rank it somewhere different, as the series is so damn divisive, but it's surely at least better than Alien: Resurrection in my mind. :P

While I generally agree, that doesn't feel like the fairest comparison, unless you've only ever seen Aliens once in your life. :P I feel like Andy (the defective android) was pretty damn memorable, personally.

I can remember Andy the android better than any of the other cast. You're right, they were immemorable. But Andy was pretty cool IMO. I noticed they used someone of African descent to highlight how he was being bullied for being different...kind of an interesting allegory.

    SPOILERS AHEAD

I finally watched it, it basically tried to assemble the most crucial elements of several Alien movies of the past.

I definitively see a lot of references to Nostromo. a bit of action vs. plural Aliens like in James Cameron's version. Ressurection and the Alien/Human Hybrid... Human Hybrid this time looks more line the Queen from past versions...

All of that individually nothing truly novel but still a proper Alien movie nonetheless.

Did you guys watch "Memory. Origins of Alien" - 2019, documentary about original Alien movie?

Yep, I don't disagree with any of that. Like I said (or at least implied?) I think it was far more successful than I expected it to be at that. I expected it to be some kind of half-baked Gen Z re-make of Alien, but I enjoyed it.

Did you guys watch "Memory. Origins of Alien" - 2019, documentary about original Alien movie?

    OOoh. Nope! Sounds fun.

Speaking of new Alien(s) related stuff, there's a new Alien TV show on the horizon called Alien: Earth that I believe is supposed to show up in 2025. It's supposed to be a prequel to Alien. I'm... highly skeptical, but we'll see.
