I've not done this with a modem personally, but there are widely available USB to serial dongles - I have several and use them from time to time at work. These usually have their own drivers, so check on OS compatibility before buying, but once installed, your OS should see it as a normal serial port, and in theory (I say theory, but I'd guess someone else on here has done this?) an external modem should work normally with it.
