Living in New Zealand has a lot of perks, and I'm a fan of NZ's wide variatey of great red and white wines, they do some great Malbec here too, however I know what you mean about Argentinian... I've had a few over the years and
    every time... Damn!

I went to San Miguel De Allende, MX for a vacation back in 2009, and loved
it - a little artists enclave in the high desert in Mexico dating back to
    the 1600s.

We drank a lot of Uruguayan wine called a Tannat, it was an interesting
little red, reminded me of a good chianti. Did I mention we drank a lot of
it? With the exchange rate it worked out to around USD$7 a bottle - in a restaurant!

I've started seeing them around here in California recently, but with all of the wine we have locally, it's hard for an import to get a foothold here.

Same with Pinotage, a South African variety. It's a variety of Pinot made
for hotter, arid climates and has a slight grapefruity finish to it.

Cheaper Pinotages were all grapefruit. :)

... Now, I'm getting notes of Tomato...

What varieties? All we see in the USA from South America are Malbecs,
    mostly, and the odd Tannat.

    ... Overtly resist change

Well, what I see here is:

    Argentine: malbec
    Urugay : tannat
    Chile: Cabernet Sauvignon or Carmenere
Portugal: aaah.. lots of stuff hehehe

those are the ones most used here, from those countries. ok, are there Cabenets
from Argentine, too? sure, but much less tham malbecs, and so on
